Puttalam is a district situated near to the West Coast of Sri Lanka. Situated at the apex of the Coconut triangle, Puttalam is the second largest Coconut producer of the country. The district capital is Puttalam, which borders the Kala Oya and Modaragam Aru in the north, Anuradhapura District and Kurunegala District in the east, Ma Oya in the south, and the Indian Ocean in the west. Puttalam is well known for its picturesque lagoons, popular for shallow sea fishing and prawn farming activities. The town of Kalpitiya, and the Kalpitiya Peninsula, is located in this district. And Tabbowa, a fertile land for agriculture records highest paddy production per acre.  Famous for salt and fishing, Puttalam is the home to one of Sri Lanka’s largest lagoons, also called Puttalam lagoon.

Puttalam is the main salt producer of the country.Apart from salt and fishing, the main income for the Puttalamians is from agriculture and trading. Many people own coconut estates in the areas surrounding the town. Lands for sale in Puttalam, The so called prawn farming is an exciting new investment opportunity for both people within and outside Puttalam. One of country’s main cement plants is located in Puttalam.

Holland fort at Kalpitiya, St. Anne's Church in Thalawila, Munneshwaram Kovil in Chillaw and Mohideen Jumma Mosque (known as Grand Mosque) in Puttalam underline the historical importance of this region.
